Facebool in El SalvadorThe amiable Social networking site where 15% of the world internet users like to sign in to connect with others is now officially bigger in terms of population than the fourth country in the world, Indonesia, there are more than 250 Millon Facebook users as of today.

What is happening in El Salvador’s Facebook? Is it worth the effort to join this network? Should my company be using it? What type of Salvadoran demographic will I impact in Facebook? these are some of the questions every Marketer in the country is asking, well here are some answers I was able to put together:

At the moment this post was written there were 149,820 Facebook users located in El Salvador this number has grown 250% in only six months!!! Compare to the rest of Central America:

 ·         Panama 342,640 Facebook users

·         Guatemala 224,860 Facebook users

·         Costa Rica 215,660 Facebook users

·         Honduras 113,000 Facebook users

·         Nicaragua 76,480 Facebook users

Here are some more key facts:

Facebook demographics The majority on the country’s Facebook population (about 86%) is under 30 years old, check this out:

·         23% are Below 18 years old

·         24% are between 18 and 21 years old

·         39% are between 21 and 30 years old (If you are in marketing you know this is where the buying power and decision making is in this days

·         18% is between 30  and 40 years old

·         9% is above 40 years old… this is great they are the 13,240 Salvadorans helping close the generation gap!!!

conversationHow about gender gap? Well the ladies have a slight advantage over men, 51% of the Salvadoran Facebook users are women… hey men we just need about 200 more man to join to close this gap!

In terms of marital status, 7% are married 2% are engaged, 9% are currently in a relationship… the rest (82%) states that they are single and form these 34,640 are actively looking for a relationship!

iStock_000005880834XSmallIn terms of workforce capabilities, 24% say they speak English and Spanish; about 11% state they have a university or a college degree.

Think about all the opportunities we have in Facebook for El Salvador knowing that the average usage people give to their Facebook is more than 27 minutes per session! Some companies and organizations are already harnessing this power, just remember the popular campaign “U2 Veni”, the created a Facebook strategy that bought together a community of more than 15,500 Salvadorans!! Is facebook for you? Of course it is, take the opportunity now get engaged today, get your company engaged too, Facebook could even be your way out of this economic crisis J

5 Twitter applications to improve your popularity and relevance

We the TwitterersAccording to the latest Anderson Analytics Survey if you are on Twitter you are part of the super-user entrepreneurial group interested in sharing and connecting with others about many subjects,  blogs and sometimes even businesses. For this  to happen we the Twitterers need to increase our networks and a good way to do this is by improving our popularity and relevance.

There are different roads to take to be relevant in Twitter, In my opinion, to be relevant, you need good content that adds value to others and also you need to build a relevant network of contacts.

I have tested different applications that serve these purposes, today I want to share with you the 5 coolest and useful ones I have found:

twitpollCreate Twitter Polls!! This is a feedback tool that helps you to create and distribute polls on Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites. Find out what your followers are thinking engage with them get their feedback.

Twitt(url)y

Twit(url)yTwitt(url)y tracks the URLs flying around the Twitterverse and provides a quick, real-time view of what people are talking about on Twitter. Each time someone tweets a URL to their followers on Twitter, Twitturly takes note of it and applies it as a vote for that URL.  Whether people link directly to the final URL, use TinyURL, Snipurl (snurl), or any other URL shortening service this application  count the “votes” correctly because their spiders actually visit every single site before it gets displayed. Check out who caused the mayor viral effect that gave you the most traffic to your site! Very, very cool!

 Tweepular

tweepularThis one is an awesomely cool Twitter Follower management application which not only lets you to buck follow and unfollow users but also check who is mutually following you, recent unfollowers (This is a much needed feature that they will hopefully release soon). The application can handle a large list of followers and it offers a nice intuitive interface, this one has worked great for me! . In the mean time while they fix the recent unfollowers tab, I’m looking for a tool to monitor people that have unfollowed me. If you know of one that does the trick please let me know in your comments!

 Twitag

TwitagThis is a #tag (Hashtag) finder for Twitter that facilitates and organizes the most recent content tagged by users.  You can see, group and share #tags (Hashtags). State of the Twittersphere in El Salvador – We need to lead the way

rokensaOver the past months, Twitter has experienced explosive growth in many countries of the world, attracting companies, politicians, celebrities and people from different backgrounds and age.

In El Salvador many people including media, journalists, companies and organizations have started to hear, talk and even join the conversation about Twitter, (hey my wife is already using her Twitter account!) so I thought it was time to research and write about the country’s State of the Twittersphere,

el-salvador-mapFirst I went around looking for Twitter data in the region and stumbled upon the most popular Twitter users By country in Central America according to Twittercounter.com (Ranked by followers count and refreshed up to July 4, 2009. (In no particular order)

Guatemala

@EdnaRheiner has been a member of Twitter since March 19, 2009 and has Tweeted 4008 times since then. @EdnaRheiner follows 3961 people

Honduras

@diariolaprensa has been a member of Twitter since November 12, 2008 and has Tweeted 4163 times since then. @diariolaprensa follows 41 people

El Salvador

@RichOsterude has been a member of Twitter since May 04, 2007 and has Tweeted 541 times since then. @RichOsterude follows 2303 people, I personally met Richard a few months ago and I can tell you he is a very nice, forward thinking person, very smart and humble always open to help a Tweep J

Nicaragua

@filedownload has been a member of Twitter since May 09, 2007 and has Tweeted 2847 times since then. @filedownload follows 2642 people

Costa Rica – Most followers in Central America

@EcoInteractive, with 61,779 followers and @Windbaron has been a member of Twitter since March 19, 2009 and has Tweeted 2292 times since then. @Windbaron follows 30590 people

Panama

@xavierdd has been a member of Twitter since March 15, 2009 and has Tweeted 1091 times since then. @xavierdd follows 2908 people

Twitter El SalvadorOk now let’s get down to business here are the facts I could find for El Salvador: currently there are about 1,000 guesstimated Twitter user accounts that state their location as El Salvador and/or state in their bios roots in “El Salvador”; Nevertheless we can only find 577 active accounts (roughly 60%) according to Tweep Search and 420 matches found for “El Salvador” in http://twellow.com a Twitter directory that acts like the Yellow pages.

According to Tweepz.com the majority of Salvadoran Twitter users (about 79%) has Cero to One Hundred Followers and the Twitter elite that has more than 1,000 followers is less than 0.9% of the total twitter population

twitterThe oldest accounts I was able to find were @omaregan (March 18/07), @calero (March 22/07), @damejiar (March 24/07), @acajutla, @victor_j (March 26/07, @FerMarroquin, @Tarkus (March 28/07), @angelvsqz (April 06/2007), @icarlx, @premiumsam01 (April 12/07) (you can find more interesting data about this using Tweepz)

El Salvador has ranked ONCE in Twitter Trending Topics, this happened when El Salvador’s national football soccer team “La Selecta” simultaneously won a game against Mexico and shut down impertinent and disrespectful words from ESPN presenter David Faitelson,

You may say this is all about pure Salvadoran Pride, we won! The game and the argument and we clearly showed him and the world we existJ

Other interesting facts are that there are different places where you can see the presence of Salvadoran Twitter-ers to give a few examples, Newspapers like La prensa Grafica @laprensagrafica, radio stations like @102nueve and TV Channels like TCS @esmitv are encouraging the use of Twitter with their aundiences, global ranking sites register Salvadoran users: http://wefollow.com/twitter/elsalvador, http://twitter.grader.com where salvadoran Tweep @queith holds the throne with a ranking of 99.5, there is even a facebook group called: Twitter-ers SALVADOREÑOS that holds virtual and face-to-face meetings and events

Twitter-ers SALVADOREÑOS

Twitter-ers SALVADOREÑOS

In my opinion there is still much work to do, as pioneers in this Salvadoran Twitterverse we should do something to help others join Twitter, we all should know that we are the only country in Central America where Twitter is not ranked in the top 100 Alexa  traffic by country, just compare to The USA  where Twitter ranks #14 or Costa Rica where it ranks #51

I would like to appeal to our powerful Salvadoran pride, we have always been known as hard workers shinning our Guanaco values, let’s do something about this TODAY!

I wrote this post in English because I wanted to shout this first to the biggest Twitter audience in the world, please expect the Spanish version this week.

To discuss this report on Twitter, use the hashtag #elsalvadorTwitter or start the conversation @rokensa

I would love to hear from you, please send me your feedback and thoughts about this post, all opinions are welcome!!
